Toilet training children can be one of the most challenging aspects of parenting. Add into that the joys and challenges of parenting a child with a disability, developmental delay or neurodivergence, and toilet training can often feel completely out of reach. At Through Life Physiotherapy we bring together expertise in Paediatric and Pelvic Health Physiotherapy to support children and families in developing the skills of continence. Let's start by answering some of your questions.
- Is my child too old now to start toilet training? No, it is never too late to build these important skills.
- I can't imagine my child will ever be independent in toiletting. Is it even worth trying? Yes, many young people with a disability can develop some skills towards toilet training which is wonderful for their dignity and independence and will reduce their burden of care long term.
- The issue for my child is constipation can you help with that? Yes, absolutely.
- My child is terrified of using a toilet can you help? Yes, absolutely.
- My child can't feel when they need to use the toilet and then they refuse to go when I ask them to, can you help? Yes, we can help with this too.
- My child is too big for a potty but is too wobbly on the toilet what should we do? We can visit your home and prescribe specialist toilet equipment so your child feels safe and secure on the loo?
- I think my child is developing the physical awareness but they have limited communication and social skills. How do I teach them a complex skill like toilet training? We use many different communication methods to support your child's development and to ease the frustration of learning these complex skills.
- Do you work with children who have a disability? Yes, we work with all children.
- Can we use our NDIS funding? Yes, if you have capacity building in your plan. We can liaise with your plan manager or support co-ordinator to ensure funds are available for continence physiotherapy.
- Can you complete a NDIS continence assessment to help us secure funding for continence aids? Yes we can.
